CEX vs DEX: Comparing Exchange Types
Arena ranks traders from both centralized exchanges (CEX) and decentralized exchanges (DEX). Here is how they compare.
Centralized Exchanges (CEX)
Examples: Binance, Bybit, OKX, Bitget, MEXC
- Data source: Public copy-trading leaderboards, APIs, and source pages
- Account model: The exchange holds customer funds; KYC and regional access vary
- Coverage: Available fields and history vary by exchange, and a public leaderboard is not necessarily the exchange's full trader population
Decentralized Exchanges (DEX)
Current Arena examples: Hyperliquid, GMX, gTrade
- Data source: Official public files/APIs, protocol indexers, and chain events or state
- Account model: Wallet-based self-custody and publicly auditable activity; smart-contract, oracle, bridge, and transaction-cost risks vary by protocol and chain
- Coverage: A reliable reconstruction needs complete history, cash flows, prices, and a protocol-version-aware decoder; an upstream leaderboard may still be bounded
How Arena Handles Differences
- Provenance is preserved so a native exchange metric is not silently presented as an on-chain reconstruction
- Compatibility comes before ranking: only metrics with compatible periods, definitions, and quality are compared; matching units alone do not make two metrics equivalent
- Confidence reflects evidence such as sample size and completeness; an unsupported field remains unavailable instead of being guessed
The result is a unified interface across CEX and DEX sources, with comparability limited to what the underlying evidence actually supports.
